No one wants to be happy for only 80 years, although sometimes we tell ourselves that.
Really, don't we all want to be perfectly happy without a time limit?
Ask yourself if you’d rather be in a happy relationship that you know from day 1 will come to an end or in one that you know from day 1 will never come to an end?
If you saw a good looking, famous, rich, young, confident bride and groom on their wedding day but there was a ticking time bomb under the table they didn’t know about or think about, wouldn’t it be strange to call them perfectly happy?
A sobering truth, memento mori, isn’t it?
The first step is having real confidence that you yourself don't have a time limit let alone your happiness having one.
That means you need to know that you can exist forever before a perfectly happy you can exist forever.
Great news: your soul is an indestructible, immortal thing.
That’s right. Your soul is an indestructible, immortal thing, although your body will pass away.
Here's a hint:
If timeless, unchanging truths can exist in your soul (like 2+2=4), then something about your soul must also be timeless and unchanging (i.e. indestructible)
So remember
If you want real confidence about the possibility of your eternal happiness from natural reason,
Make sure to get clear on the immorality of your soul for starters
What else do you want to know?
Drop it in the comments.
"Immorality of the soul" - a funny blooper, but with some truth to it, for we are all sinners!
Existing forever is a concept foreign to most. That is, while believers may think about afterlife, many don’t associate themselves in the reality of it in the present. I believe that the notion of Momento Mori is critical to understanding. How best to present this to oneself and others is the question.
